Happy New Year! Unfortunately, the excitement and hope for a fresh start is often dampened by the flu. It does not help that the Holiday Season tends to leave us run-down. Who wants to sit out on quality family time and food we only eat once per year because of feeling "under the weather"?

The answer is likely "not me" so below are best practices to incorporate into your daily routine to decrease the chance of missing out because of the flu.

  1. Stay hydrated. Aim to consume half your body weight (lbs) in fluid ounces of water. Keep in mind that coffee, energy drinks, and fruit juices can be dehydrating. Proper hydration improves the circulatory and lymphatic system – both are important for eliminating toxins and keeping the immune system strong.
  2. Centre on Citrus. Fruit such as oranges, lemons, and grapefruit are packed with vitamin C – an antioxidant important for cells of our immune system. If you cannot stand the tartness, consider supplementing with vitamin C.
  3. Boost Your Immune System. Eating the colors of the rainbow ensures your diet includes micronutrients needed to strengthen your immune system when you need it the most. For extra support, consider Echinacea – packed with immune-stimulating power.
  4. Rest Well. The immune system resets during a good night’s rest so optimize its capacity. Research shows the average adult requires 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night. Keep in mind that sleep is not just about quantity, it is also about quality.
  5. Don’t Treat with Antibiotics. Look for botanicals with anti-viral properties, such as Sambucus (Elderberry). The culprit of the flu is a virus so attacking it like a bacteria will not work. In fact, doing so can impeded the immune system thereby making you susceptible to the virus itself.
